Isaac Newton sketched the first version in 1666 after bending sunlight through a prism and arranging the resulting hues into a circle. Three and a half centuries later, that same circular logic still decides which colors look intentional together and which ones just clash.
The idea underneath it is simple: every color sits at a specific angle on the wheel, and the angle between two colors predicts how they will feel next to each other. Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Colors
Every color on the traditional wheel belongs to one of three families. Understanding the family tree is the foundation everything else builds on.
Primary
Can't be mixed from anything else
Red, yellow, and blue on the traditional artist's wheel. Every other color on the wheel is built from these three.
Secondary
Two primaries, mixed 1:1
Orange, green, and purple. Each sits exactly halfway between the two primaries that made it, 60° apart on the wheel.
Tertiary
A primary + its neighboring secondary
Red-orange, yellow-green, blue-purple, and three more. Most colors designers actually reach for live here, not at the primaries.
RYB, RGB, CMYK: Same Circle, Three Different Jobs
The primaries you were taught in school aren't the ones your screen or your printer actually use.
RYB
Pigment · subtractive
The wheel taught in art class. Mixing pigments absorbs light, so combining all three muddies toward black. Built for painting and print intuition, not screens.
RGB
Light · additive
Screens emit light, so mixing works backwards from paint: red, green, and blue at full strength make white. Every hex code you've ever used runs on this model.
CMYK
Ink · subtractive
Cyan, magenta, and yellow ink gets closer to true black than RYB ever could, but not close enough, which is why the 'K' (black) channel exists.

Hue, Saturation, and Value

The color's name: red, green, blue, and everything between. 0° to 360°.
Saturation · how intense it is
Gray on the left, fully vivid on the right. Low saturation reads as mature; high saturation reads as demanding.
Value · how bright it is

RGB asks you to balance three light channels at once, useful for computers, hard for humans. HSV separates what color it is from how strong and how bright, so you can answer one question at a time.
